GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR
Alpine, Texas called “The Eden of the West,” by international journalist, Enoch Worlanyo, is known for its scenic beauty, stunning geology, rich history, cultural heritage, dark skies, as well as its warm and welcoming people. With plenty to do around town from our Historic Walking Tour, Hispanic Heritage Tour, Mural Tour, to our Ghost Tours there is sure to be something for everyone.
Make your first stop our Visitors Center located at 106 North 3rd Street. It has a welcoming covered porch and rocking chairs, which are perfect for looking over the brochures and pamphlets that provide information about destinations in the area. Be sure to check out our numerous unique shops, stores, art galleries, and restaurants while you are downtown.
Alpine is home to Sul Ross State University which houses the Museum of the Big Bend. The museum contains a world-class map collection and numerous exhibits. Call for an appointment to view the map collection or to schedule a guided tour. During the summer months, you may be able to see a play at the outdoor Theater of the Big Bend or catch a baseball game at the historic o6 Baseball Stadium, home of the o6 Cowboys. Big Bend National Park, the largest national park in Texas, is just 80 miles South of Alpine on Highway 118.
The Alpine region is located in the largest international dark sky reserve in the world, making it the perfect place to stargaze and explore the night sky. Situated geographically between Marfa, Fort Davis, Marathon, and Terlingua, Alpine is the perfect central location for many of the activities in the Big Bend Region such as star parties at the McDonald Observatory and hikes in the state and national parks. Close out your day with a stay at one of our historic hotels, cozy guest houses, or relaxing bed and breakfasts. We guarantee you will be planning your next trip to Alpine before your head hits the pillow.
- Catherine Eaves, Mayor of Alpine
